 Skill Center Positions:Left Field
A left fielder needs to be able to judge balls, line drives and ground balls. Speed like that of Ricky Henderson is not necessary. Proper technique and good footwork will make up for the speed. Former left fielders such as Carl Yastzremski and Lou Pinella were not the quickest but covered their position better than anyone. They were able to do this by the knowledge of the hitters and excellent positioning.
Normally the left fielder has the weakest arm. The throws from second and third are the shortest by any other outfield position. If the ball is fielded properly and quickly outfielders with the weakest arms can hold base runners from advancing to the next base.
Since arm strength and speed are not the key ingredient for left fielders, many teams or coaches find a great offensive player who could possibly be lacking in defensive skills and put them in left field. Players need to strive to be at their highest potential as possible. Work on your weaknesses! |
