 Skill Center Positions:2nd Base

In the major leagues the best second baseman display good leadership, range, quick feet, leaping ability, and bat control. A symbol of a good second baseman is one that has quick hands and quick feet. Roberto Alomar of the Mets is one of the best in the National league and Brett Boone of the Seattle Mariners is one of the best in the American league. To turn a double play and have quick feet around the bag might be the most important play in baseball, especially as the leagues get higher. The middle infielders need to be “on-field” leaders. Many game situations such as pick-offs, rundowns bunt plays involve the second baseman. A second baseman is often referred to as a “heady” player. The second baseman should be prepared and alert. Craig Biggio seems to always be in the right place at the right time.

Great arm strength is not necessary at this position. Most of the throws that are made with the exception of relays are very short. However to throw with accuracy and at different angles is needed.

The second baseman should be an all-round athlete. Jumping, diving and acrobatics are a part of being a skilled second baseman.
